Studio Mixing

The “art of mixing” has evolved in style, but the physics of sound remains the same. The elements for a great mix lies in the hands and ears of mix engineers. However, the fact remains that in order for a mix engineer to truly produce a platinum quality mix, they need to be working in an acoustically accurate mix room with premium monitoring and the right tools and equipment.

Studio B features the best in modern DAW mixing with the combined ability to insert analog outboard gear into the equation. 

When doing a full update of Studio B in 2021, we wanted to create an epic modern mixing environment while maintaining our philosophy of flexibility. The superb acoustics in Studio B allowed us to focus on the workflow to create the most modern and versatile room for audio production.

The DAW is centered around a large 43” Slate Raven MTZ with 32 I/O for plenty of high-quality audio conversion to inject the analog domain into the digital world. SSL summing to accommodate all 32 outputs plus an additional 12 Channels of mono summing that feed directly to the SSL master buss for the ultimate in processing and flexibility.

Standard monitoring Options for Studio B include the Genelec 8350a nearfields and the Genelec 7380 15” powered subwoofer. Both with the Genelec Smart Active Monitor (SAM) calibration technology. Also standard are Yamaha NS-10s and custom ForestAllen Large Field monitors.

Studio B:

Studio B is the consummate combination of “In-The-Box” digital and analog production. This room delivers the best of both worlds. Also powered by the latest Pro Tools HDX system, this room adopts a sophisticated analog summing interface so the digital world can interface with the analog world in a seamless and productive fashion. Fully furnished with an impressive list of modern and vintage outboard gear, including full API, NEVE, and SSL options for maximum stylistic flexibility. Studio B also offers multiple playback monitoring choices.

Studio B offers a custom-designed isolation lock/vocal room that delivers the flexibility and energy of a “live studio” in a smaller, more comfortable, and intimate surroundings.

Mastering Services

Mastering is not a “one size fits all” or where one process suits every project. Power Station takes a different perspective on the mastering process by offering different opportunities to meet each individual project’s specific needs.

Our mastering options include the following:

• Digital Mastering – Mastering completely in the digital domain
• Analog Mastering – Utilizing an all-analog mastering audio path using tools like our “Legendary Audio Masterpiece or our Studer 2-Track analog tape machine.”
• Hybrid Mastering – Some projects benefit from using both digital and analog signal paths to maximize harmonic content and dynamic range.
• Specialty Mastering Houses – Power Station has relationships with some of the world’s most renowned master houses. We are happy to connect our clients with the perfect mastering solution, even if it means sending it to a specialty mastering facility.

Mastering Methods and Myths:

The record labels and professional record industry understand the mysteries and the benefits of proper mastering. Others know that mastering is a “required” process but sometimes don’t understand the realities of true mastering as it applies to their work product. Mastering is often done in one of two types of facilities. Either at the recording studio or at a specialty, “Mastering House.”

Mastering Labs or “Mastering Houses” are actually quite different from recording and mixing studios. While the tools and equipment used in mastering are similar in look, they generally are quite different in design and application. Digital technology has certainly bridged the gap between recording, mixing, and mastering tools. The biggest difference is the room design and approach when using these tools.

A Mastering House generally will be acoustically designed and set up to focus solely on the mastering process. While recording studios are focused both creatively and acoustically on the individual parts of the music and assembling them together into a mix, a Mastering House will focus on the mix as a whole.

Due to Power Station’s flexibility in acoustic spaces and specialty equipment, we can offer mastering solutions that are a good fit for any project.

Mastering Options:

Digital Mastering:
Power Station offers the best in digital mastering. From the top Digital Plug-Ins to custom-built digital mastering algorithms developed internally that deliver powerful digital mastering tools unique to our facility.

Analog Mastering:
From analog tape mastering to precision outboard analog gear, including our Legendary Audio Masterpiece, we offer analog mastering at its finest.

Hybrid Mastering:
The term “hybrid” describes the ability to incorporate analog and digital mastering tools into the same session. Some styles of product warrant a total digital path, and others fare better in a total analog path. Nothing in life is “black or white,” and audio is no different. Power Station has the ability to include analog tools in the digital domain at any point in the audio path. This allows us the unique ability to sculpt your master in the best possible range of colors and light!

Specialty Mastering Houses:
We truly understand the mastering process. So much so that if a client already has a mastering relationship, we can help integrate the “mix to master” process for our clients. Additionally, in some cases, we even encourage the use of outside specialty mastering labs or “mastering houses.” We have relationships with many of the top mastering houses around the globe and are happy to help our studio clients navigate the process.

While the digital domain dominates the process of today’s audio production, analog is still a very widely used and highly desired tool in modern production. Analog gear like high-end mic pre’s, EQs, Compressor/Limiters, and even Tape Machines have become sought-out tools. Direct to Analog Multitrack Recording:
Record directly to 2” (24-track) Analog Tape. For those who want the “full-vintage” experience, ask us about how we can service your analog options!

Analog Master Mixdown:
Mixdown to our Studer Master deck. Mixing direct to analog gives certain styles of music that special analog “punch” and “warmth.” Many top mastering engineers still prefer some styles of music mixed and delivered on analog tape. 

Analog Pass-Thru:
Do you want the sound of analog on your individual tracks but want to avoid the cost of multiple reels of tape? Our “Analog Pass-Thru” service takes your digital tracks and passes them through the analog domain and back to the digital DAW. You then will have both the original digital track and the option of the analog version to choose from. We can pass your tracks not only through our tape machines but also have options to pass through our Rupert Neve 9098i console for that huge “Neve Transformer” sound! 

Mix-Stem Processing:
Much like “Analog Pass-Thru” services but focused on “stems” in modern mix productions. Bring us your mix stems, and we can pass them through our analog console, the vast array of outboard gear, or a combination of both! Load in your drum stems, and we can process them through our outboard gear to further enhance your mixes. 

Analog To Digital Archival Transfer:
Bring your analog reels to transfer to digital formats. This allows a secure digital safety copy and allows for easy access to old catalogs and content. Power Station has several tape machine formats to work in.
